A system wide central plant retrofit completed for a major community college system in the southwest allowed for the designer of the energy efficient central plant to qualify for a Section 179D deduction of $1,507,435.20. Features of the central plant included ice storage, VAVS, and building controls and automation systems. As a result of the energy efficient retrofit to the campus buildings connected to the central plant, it achieved a power and energy savings of 53.40% over ASHRAE 90.1-2001. The energy efficient design allowed the energy services company, as the project designer, to claim the maximum Section 179D deduction of $1.80 per square foot for their work.
