The construction industry lost 1,000 jobs in March, the first decline in 14 months, according to an analysis by the Associated General Contractors of America (AGC).
Association officials said that weakening demand for residential and public projects were the major cause of the decline, offsetting gains in other sectors.
“Except for multifamily construction, home building remains weak and government officials just can’t seem to find a way to pay for needed repairs to a host of aging facilities,” said Ken Simonson, the association’s chief economist.
But the overall extended trend is still positive — the industry employs 282,000 more workers than in March 2014.
