Green Building Council Sets Ambitious Goal

As their part of the United Nations’ Cop21 climate talks in Paris, the U.S. Green Building Council made a commitment to increase green building it certifies to more than 5 billion square feet (478 million square meters) over the next five years.

USGBC president Roger Platt said that using green building rating systems such as LEED and EDGE could play a major role in reducing U.S. carbon emissions. Buildings are estimated to make up about one third of all emissions worldwide.

The council projects that by 2018, green building will account for over 3.3 million U.S. jobs, more than one-third of the country’s entire construction sector.
